When I was last traveling, I downloaded the LinkedIn app since I did not want to open my laptop. And just with that one small action, my frequency of checking LinkedIn went up.
On my laptop, I log out of LinkedIn when I don’t want to use it but on the mobile app, I wouldn’t do it.
In unmindful moments — and we all have them — we do things that have low friction.
We wouldn’t type a long password and check Instagram, but if it is one click away, why not? We will snack on potato chips if the packet is lying next to us but we might not get up and go fetch it from the kitchen pantry.
This is kind of obvious. But there is another aspect of our environment that we underestimate even more — the people we surround ourselves with.
If the people you hang out with are movie or cricket buffs, you will also become one after some time. If your friends talk about investing all the time, you will not just start doing that, your investing style will also start resembling theirs.
Here is a simple idea: Carefully shape your environment.
Get rid of negative people — especially the non-doers and endless talkers. Reduce unhealthy food in the fridge. Insert friction in the path of undesirable habits.
Every 1% change in your environment may have a 5x impact on your life.
