AI Will Not Kill You — But Distraction Will

A year ago, virtually every second LinkedIn profile mentioned ‘Web3’ as a skill. Today, nobody is doing that.

Similarly, I recently saw an ad proclaiming that ‘Prompt engineering’ is the new hot thing for which employers are paying Rs 4 crore salaries! Thankfully though, I don’t see ‘Prompt engineering’ in LinkedIn profiles yet.

One could dismiss these things as harmless FOMO. But they are not.

When we keep chasing the latest shiny thing, we are missing out on building complex and deep skills — the only defence against AI.

AI will first eat the jobs that require shallow, low-level skills. The jobs that require complex and deep thinking, judgment, and human touch, will always thrive.

I am not saying — be oblivious of emerging technologies. But I promise you — you can’t build a good long-term career just by learning prompt engineering or learning how to just use ChatGPT.

You need deep, rock-solid skills, that come from focus and perseverance. And distraction is the enemy of that.

In the age of rapid technological change, the need for focus and depth is greater than ever before.

AI will not kill you — but distraction will.
