Why Staying Small Became My Biggest Advantage

When I became a first-time entrepreneur, one question I dreaded was: “How big is your team?” Because everyone was trying to size you up. And my startup was practically just me. 😬

Embarrassed, I craved the day when I would be leading a large team. Sadly, I got my wish.

A few years later, we had a nearly 100-member team. And the cash burn, the complexity, and the people issues gave me nightmares!

Today, I run HabitStrong with a 7-member team. And ironically, it has turned out to be a blessing!

Because when we have limited bandwidth, we have to ruthlessly say ‘no’ to distractions, bullshit initiatives, and unnecessary meetings. We have no layers of managers or committees.

And of course, there is no time for micromanagement. 😊

Since we barely have the bandwidth to do the essentials, we focus on the few things that truly matter. And we do better work, and feel happier.

Being small is not always a bad thing. But you don’t realize until you become big.
