Why do we spend so much time in meetings, even when it’s a horrendous waste of our time and talent?
One might say, “What choice do I have?” Who wants to ruffle feathers by declining or pushing back on meeting invites?
That’s partly true.
But there’s also a hidden reason. Sometimes, we attend meetings because when we’re seen as super busy and involved in everything, nobody questions, “What contribution did you really make?”
Being busy can be a convenient way to hide from our insecurities. But do we want to live our lives hiding behind busyness rather than creating real value?
When we are busy without doing meaningful work, our skills and capabilities wither, further increasing our insecurities. This becomes a vicious cycle.
Don’t fall in this trap.
There’s nothing we need to hide from—we all have the potential to create value in some way. As we do, our confidence will grow, our insecurities will diminish, and we won’t have to fear adversities like job loss.
Wasting your time in meetings and staying busy is the worst disservice you can do to your career.
Stop doing that and show what you’re truly capable of. Otherwise, what’s the point of it all?
