For a long time, I had this habit of replying before people had even completed their question.
Maybe, I subconsciously wanted to impress them with my rapid response. Or maybe, I was just impatient.
Regardless, this is a terrible habit.
When people are talking, the first thing they want is not a brilliant answer, but they want to be heard — fully, and patiently. Talking over somebody takes the joy out of the conversation.
Also, a logical and thoughtful response is way more impressive than a reflex response delivered half a millisecond later.
Next time you are in a conversation, don’t reply instantly even if you have the answer ready. Listen while people talk. Consciously pause for a few seconds and structure your thoughts. And when you talk, deliver a precise, logical response.
The questioner will feel respected and in turn, will respect you so much more! Thoughtfulness is way more impressive than a fast and furious talking machine.
A thoughtful response is like a knockout punch. Hit once, but hit hard.
