Real Character Reveals Itself Only in a Crisis

One of my bosses in the police service was a soft-spoken man — more like a college professor than an intimidating, toughened-up cop.

But the first time I was caught up in a violent student agitation, I suddenly noticed that he was standing behind me. He had come to support and guide me.

I told him, “Sir, please don’t worry — you can be in the control room. I will call you if needed.” But he insisted on being there.

In the police, the responsibility always lies with the senior-most officer on the spot — so his neck would be on the line if anything blew up. But in every dangerous situation, he would show up.

He had no bravado but was steady like a rock.

Once, when I was facing a judicial inquiry, he flew down from Hyderabad, prepared thoroughly, and immaculately presented the facts in his deposition. He did not have to do any of it.

Normally, people talk big but stay as far away from trouble as possible. He would do the opposite.

Too often, we get taken in by charisma, looks, and mannerisms. In reality, they mean nothing.

At a cocktail party, everybody is brave, generous, and charming. But if you want to see a person’s real character — watch them in a crisis.
