I have cracked the ‘immortality serum’ and you can take a sip. But there is a catch — once you drink it, you HAVE to live forever. No matter how much you love or hate your life, you will have to continue living — no escape.
People around you will grow old, and one by one, they will pass away. All your friends, classmates, and buddies will be gone. You may be lonely, but you have to keep going.
Will you still take the immortality serum?
Of course, this was just a thought experiment. 🙂 But it does clarify one thing — immortality isn’t what we are after. Then what is it?
We want to live a worthwhile life — whatever that means.
But what would make our life worthwhile? The answer lies not in making ‘bucket lists’ or going on a world tour — those are just temporary indulgences.
Even, I don’t have the answer, I can hazard a guess.
For each of us, there are things that give us joy and meaning. Some love problem-solving and creative work. Others care about relationships and friendships. Some like climbing mountains, literally or figuratively (e.g., professional success).
And some just want peace of mind and contentment.
Maybe, and just maybe, all there is to life is just experiencing these small joys mindfully.
What’s your take?
