The Beauty in the Ordinary

You feel you don’t have a story to tell because your life is not exciting?

Let me then tell you about Neman Ashraf, a police constable in Pakistan. A few years ago, I came across Neman’s posts on Quora, where he used to write stories about his life, his family, and his struggles as a human.

He shares no superlative achievements (e.g., “I am humbled to be Pakistan’s 30 under 30”). No dramatic stories of police encounters — just the daily struggles and experiences of a human being and a cop.

And from what I remember, Neman had 70,000 plus followers on Quora.

We don’t have to have an extraordinary life or be the CEO of OpenAI to have stories worth telling. And in some sense, we all do live an exceptional life — who else has a life like yours?

Storytelling is not about exceptional events but about the exceptional moments in a perfectly ordinary life. And if we are observant, we all have those moments.

In the ordinariness of your and my daily life are hidden the stories that people would love to hear.

All you have to do is find those stories and share them.
