Why Constraints Make You a Better Writer (and Thinker)

Back in the days when LinkedIn had a 1300 character limit for posts, writing was a real pain — I often had to edit out even seemingly essential stuff to fit the character limit.

Today, with a 3,000 character limit, your creativity is no longer stunted by these arbitrary limitations.

But is that true?

Truth be told, earlier, the essential suff that I was forced to cut out was often just fluff that my mind had rationalised. Yes, today, I can share more complex ideas, go deeper, and so on. But sadly, I can also churn out more fluff.

It is not that I want to write sloppily but words are like babies — once you give them birth, they all look beautiful.

In writing, just as in life, we need constraints — be it money constraints, time constraints, or character limit constraints.

The next time you feel that you don’t have enough money, resources or time, don’t beat yourself up — it might be what you need to do your life’s best work.
