When you delegate work, remind yourself that:
1. People won’t approach problems the way you do.
2. People’s slides or spreadsheets won’t look exactly like yours.
3. People won’t probably do anything your exact way.
And that’s ok. Because people are not expected to become our clones. Just as we did not become clones of our bosses, when we came into the organization.
Yes, in any workplace, there are benchmarks, norms, and expectations for work quality. And we have to be trained to perform within those benchmarks.
But within those boundaries, individual style and creativity should flourish. Because that is when teams flourish.
Letting go of what we believe is ‘the best and the only way’ to do things is the first step in becoming a good leader.
