The Hardest Test of Leadership

The best tonic for your mental health is having a kind boss.

Even in the most high-profile assignments, when my bosses have been bad, I have hated the experience. And when I had good bosses, even mediocre work felt worthwhile.

If you lead a team, being kind is one of the best gifts you can give to your team. But if it is so obvious, why don’t we do it?

Because being kind is really hard, especially when things are not going well. When there is pressure from the top — do you hold it or do you pass it down? I have failed this test many times.

Kindness requires not just empathy, but also courage and guts. Everybody can be kind on a good day.

What matters is — can you also be kind on bad days?
